AI Moderation That Speaks Your Language: Meeting Legal and Cultural Demands in Brazil and Beyond

While AI-driven tools and large language models (LLMs) have significantly advanced content moderation, they are not without limitations. Many of these systems are predominantly trained on English-language data, which leads to a language bias that hinders their ability to detect nuanced scams, hate speech, and culturally specific content in languages like Portuguese and Spanish. This session will explore the linguistic and cultural blind spots of current LLMs, highlighting how Eurocentric and Americentric training data can result in moderation gaps. We will examine real-world implications of these biases, discuss the importance of local linguistic and cultural understanding, and propose strategies to bridge these gaps, ensuring more inclusive, accurate, and context-aware digital safety in the Brazilian online ecosystem.
