Advisory Board Spotlight: Jennifer Kelly - Etsy Senior Director of Marketplace Integrity

Updated: Feb 15, 2022

As the deadline approaches to apply to join the 2022 Marketplace Risk Advisory Board, we caught up with our newest Advisory Board member, Jennifer Kelly, to get her thoughts on the marketplace space and to find out what motivated her to join the Marketplace Risk Advisory Board.

Jennifer Kelly is the Senior Director of Marketplace Integrity at Etsy, the most recognized online marketplace for unique and handmade goods. In her role at Etsy, Jennifer oversees the operational teams responsible for content moderation, financial crimes investigations, seller verification, legal notice and takedown, and feature vetting.

Prior to joining Etsy, Jennifer served as PayPal's Global Financial Crimes Program Manager and a Vice President in Compliance at Citi.

Needless to say, we’re very excited that Jennifer has joined the Advisory Board!

Our Advisory Board is the very lifeblood of everything we do at Marketplace Risk. From conferences and virtual events to resources and advice for startups, our board takes a hands-on approach in providing indispensable insight and guidance, drawing on their broad experience that spans a multitude of platforms and industries.

As Marketplace Risk continues to grow, so have we expanded our Advisory Board, with calls for new members who can use their skill and experience to help young startups to find their feet. Jennifer is one of the marketplace experts who answered the call, so we put a few questions to get to know her better, and find out how she was inspired to join Marketplace Risk’s Advisory Board:

How were you first introduced to marketplaces?

I had some exposure at PayPal, but mostly in my roles since joining Etsy in 2019.

What fascinates you most about marketplaces?

Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act [and] the legal structure governing liability, related proposals to reshape this law, [and] the future global regulatory framework for marketplaces

What motivates you the most about your platform?

The economic opportunities it unlocks for small businesses [and] individual entrepreneurs, most of whom on Etsy are women.

What one or two things do you do each day religiously? Read Casey Newton's Platformer newsletter [and I] listen to NPR over morning coffee.

What inspires you from a business point of view?

Program building, operational process design, translating laws [and] regulations into operational controls, [and] helping shape overall risk culture and literacy.

What’s your favorite social media channel, and what was the last thing you posted on it?

Instagram, a picture of my 9 month old baby James with his first tooth!

What do you think the world of marketplaces will look like in 10 years?

Hard to say, but I think the current conversation regarding revising legal structure established by Section 230 will play a huge role in shaping what marketplaces [and] platforms will look like in 10 years.

The deadline to apply to the Advisory Board is Friday, February 11. If you’d like to be part of a dynamic group of founders, operators and subject matter experts, and your expertise and ideas could help us to better support the marketplace ecosystem, check out the call for Advisory Board members and apply here.
